How We Diagnose Gum Disease
At Dell’Acqua Choi Dental Studio, checking the health of your gums is a routine part of every exam. Gum disease is common and often silent, which is why early detection is so important.
What to Expect During a Gum Evaluation
Using a small measuring tool called a periodontal probe, we gently check the spaces between your teeth and gums (called “pockets”).
- Healthy gums have shallow pockets (3 mm or less) and do not bleed.
- Deeper pockets or bleeding may indicate the presence of gum disease.
We also assess bleeding, inflammation, tooth movement, and other signs to determine if any treatment is needed.
Stages of Gum Disease
Understanding where you are in the process helps us create a treatment plan that works for you:
- Gingivitis – The earliest stage. Gums may be red, swollen, or bleed when brushing. This is reversible with good hygiene and professional cleanings.
- Periodontitis – Plaque hardens into tartar, causing the gums to pull away from the teeth. Pockets deepen, bacteria increase, and bone loss may begin.
- Advanced Periodontitis – As gum and bone tissue continue to break down, teeth may loosen or shift. Without treatment, teeth may need to be removed.
If you’re noticing bleeding gums, bad breath, or gum sensitivity, don’t wait. Let’s catch issues early and keep your smile healthy.

Patient Reviews
I have been living for my entire adult life with unattractive teeth. I heard about Dr. DellAcqua and her cosmetic dentistry magic. I wanted to fix my smile in time for my 60th birthday celebration. I met her and really trusted her to make me look natural and not artificial. Well, she did it! I wish I would have done it sooner. I feel and look younger and I am finally proud to smile.
